Christmas Lights around the harbour at Mevagissey

December 22, 2025

Every year, Nick and Liz have a little winter tradition they absolutely love — hopping in the car and heading off in search of Christmas lights. It’s something they really look forward to, and this year their festive adventure led them to the beautiful fishing village of Mevagissey, a place we think our guests here in Callestock would enjoy just as much. It also brought back wonderful memories for Liz, as Mevagissey is where her grand-parents lived and where she spent a lot of her childhood school holidays. It was so peaceful and quiet around the harbour, we were surprised that it wasn’t busier, however, it was lovely for us.

The journey over there already feels special. As you drive down towards the village, the valley is lined on both sides with homes sparkling with Christmas lights, gently guiding you down towards the harbour. Once you arrive, Mevagissey feels wonderfully festive, with twinkling lights all around the harbour and tucked into the narrow streets, creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere that’s perfect for a winter evening stroll. There were a couple of fish and chip shops open and I must admit we were tempted but resisted as we already had planned to visit one of the very welcoming pubs in the village.

After soaking up the sights, we ended the evening at The Fountain Inn, a lovely old pub full of character and history. It has been run by the same landlord for over 40 years, and that sense of tradition really shows. The pub was beautifully decorated for Christmas, with a warm and welcoming open fire crackling away — the perfect place to escape the winter chill. We enjoyed festive drinks and delicious food, but what really stood out was the welcome. The locals made us feel instantly at home, turning a simple night out into a truly memorable experience.

If you’re staying with us in Callestock and fancy a festive evening out, Mevagissey make the perfect choice. Whether it’s for the Christmas lights, a wander around the harbour, or a cosy evening by the fire at The Fountain Inn, it’s a magical spot that captures the spirit of the festive season beautifully.
