As the Summer arrives at Callestock, so does Horatio the virile bull...
Having spent the Winter on the banks of the River Fal with his owner, Horatio returns to Callestock Courtyard this month to sow his seeds and keep the herd going beyond 2017.
Callestock has been home to a dairy herd for over 20 years, supplying at least 500 litres of fresh milk every day, to local producers such as Rodda's to use in clotted cream, butter, fudge and shortbread.
"Our milk is sent all over the world through our partnerships with food producers," explained Callestock owner Liz. "The continued success of the herd is dependent on annual breeding so we're delighted to see Horatio back in the meadow."
And it's not just breeding that keeps the herd going. Cows are intelligent and sensitive creatures, just like humans, who love to play, particularly when the sun is shining, so their surroundings are also essential to their happiness.
"When they first come outside after being cooped up for the Winter they prance and jump for joy!" smiled Liz.
The 2017 calving season is already well underway at Callestock after last year's successful breeding. "Three calves were born just last night. One of our neighbours called us to say one of the cows was in labour, and next thing we knew she texted us to tell us it was a girl! It's a very exciting time of year."
Callestock Courtyard holiday cottages are adjacent to the farm, where the herd quietly graze throughout the year.
